For the duration of the rank, you get access to the special assistant. You can find his icon on the left from the settings button at the bottom.
The First Mate allows you to complete battles and collect rewards for them faster. The assistant requires a minimum of 3 heroes to work. So, he can complete battles only with a full crew.
The assistant has a nice system of settings:
You can choose activities, where the assistant will be used (Side encounters, ships, etc).
You can choose a level of caution, which will be used in battled (From “Cautious” to “Berserker”
You can always change heroes used by the First Mate and add new ones.
All the actions are recorded in the special log in the menu of the First Mate. So, you won’t miss anything and will collect all the rewards.
